Smash Bros. Wii U Release Date Annouced

As expected now that Mario and Co. are smashing the hell out of each other Nintendo has given us the release date for Super Smash Bros for Wii U and Amiibo.

Not only do we know its release date but it will also come in (possibly) 3 flavours; The core game, The Amiibo pack (bundled with an Mario Amiibo) and the GC pack (comes with Gamecube Adapter). Check out the trailer below

As we saw in the video there will be 18 Amiibos for release this year and in an effort to slightly seperate Amiibo from Smash Bros it will launch November 28th, UPDATE: The above Amiibo's will come in two waves. The First wave figures we all ready know about. Zelda, Luigi, Captain Falcon, Pit, Didy Kong and Little Mac. The secound wave will hit December 19th.

I suspect we may get an Mario Kart X Amiibo update around then too. As we reported before several figures have been discounted to a neat £10 on Amazon

Abe's Take
Hopefully giving a released date will kill the Smash Bros Wii U delayed news storys on other sites. Game Informer has been the worst for this as every news story about smash or the Wii U claimed it's delayed.

anyway... I'm glade we have a date for this, as much as i am enjoying Smash on 3DS I'm finding it hard to learn the new characters moves on the small screen, I look forward to seeing them in glorious HD

The Offical Nintendo Magazine Is No More

In this digital era we see more and more magazines and papers going out of print, especially the specialist magazines and now an old favourite of ours has recived the old blue shell.

The Official Nintendo Magazine coming a close with issue issue 114, some 22 years after it started life as Nintendo Magazine System and has followed all the systems till the Wii U and 3DS.

It's unknown if the ONM site will continue as it has become quiet of late and like it's sister sites OXM and OPM have also had their staff cut right down. Today the ONM site posted this.

The last issue of Official Nintendo Magazine, which launched in the UK in 2002, will be in stores on 14th October, 2014 (Issue 114). Throughout its tenure, Official Nintendo Magazine has continued to bring fans, news, interviews, previews and reviews on both new and retro Nintendo hardware and software.

Nintendo will continue to speak directly to fans via Nintendo Direct, our social media and online channels and public events.

Nintendo UK and Future will continue to work closely on future projects across Gamesradar.com, CVG, Edge, Kotaku UK and Gamesmaster.

The Official Nintendo Magazine has been published by Future since 2006, prior to this it was published by EMAP.

For Official Nintendo Magazine subscription inquiries, please contact the Future Customer Services team on 0844 848 2852 (UK) or +44 1604 251045 (International).

This also marks the end of Nintendo in print as there are currently no other Nintendo magazines on the stands

Abe's Take
It's a sad truth of the modern world that most magazines will disappear, I doubt my children will buy any when they have access to all their news on several devices for free. It's a shame that a Magazine that has like us followed Nintendo from the NES wont get to see Nintendo's next systems

Goodbye ONM it's been great and thank you.

Nintendo Gives Mario & Co an J-Pop Make Over

Mario doesn't exactly have a lot of clothing, He dose his heroing, karting, partying, sporting, and "work" in the same clothes. Sure he has a doctor's outfit (little creepy) and a Tux. Why we rambling about this well Nintendo has a new advert for the New 3DS.

Yes that happened, The new trailer is obviously highlighting the New 3DS's customisation options. Namely the new face and back plates (we still don't have confirmation that the New XL also feature these). Nintendo hired Japanese singer and designer Kyary Pamyu Pamyu (don't worry first we've heard of her too) for the advert and according to legend the designs themselves.

In other news over 50 themes will be available to download in October in Japan (other territories are unknown right now) all hitting between 60 and 100 yen (that's about 30p - 60p, though I expect that rounded up to 50p - £1). Seems Nintendo is throwing some weight behind the Monster Hunter 4 G (Ultimate) launch as it is receiving 2 themes and several faceplates.

Want a New 3DS? Well we'll have to wait till 2015, We suspect the same time as the Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate launch as its the only upcoming game that will use that second analogue stick.. A LOT!.
However there is an alternative for those desperate for a New 3DS in the UK. The system will be launching in Australia in November 2014 and Australia just happens to be a PAL country.

Abe's Take
I really hope these designs make their way into something! Perhaps DLC for Smash Bros? The advert it self is wonderfully weird and Japanese, Much like Nintendo themselves.

Hyrule Warrior's Sells Well In The UK

Hyrule Warriors released on the 19th and most people didn't expect the Warriors based Zelda spin off to sell. After all the Warriors series doesn't do amazingly in the west, I believe only 1 warrior game has ever broken the top ten. Until now...

But today we learn that Hyrule Warriors as hit the UK all format chart at number 3. Placing the Wii U exclusive behind Disney Infinity 2.0 on 5 formats and Destiny on 4, numbers 2 and 1 respectively.
In single format charts HW came 4th behind 3 different Destiny versions.

Which is a rather good showing, Seeing as Destiny is advertised everywhere and its reviews only just starting to surface and people have been clawing for superheroes in Infinity for a long time. This reminds me of when Wind Waker HD game out, It also placed 3rd behind Fifa and GTA V. Just goes to show Zelda sells.

Koei Tecmo also announced a season pass for the title. Featuring 4 packs with characters, costumes, stages and new adventure mode worlds. Each pack will focus on a different Zelda game, Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword and Majora's Mask. Buying the pass nets you the Dark Link costume now.

Interesting side note: Sims 4 is the first PC game in UK chart in over 2 years.

Couldn't find a copy in store? you're not alone, seems only Argos and Online stores have any. Seems Nintendo/Stores wasn't expecting a rush. Currently Amazon has stock.

Abe's Take
I do find it interesting that the Wii U's exclusives do tend to chart well in the all formats charts as it often has to compete against games selling on multiple systems. It seems Koei Tecmo's desire to bring Zelda fans into the Warriors games could work, it's a shame both Samurai Warrior's 4 and Orochi Warriors' 3 Ultimate are skipping their new fans.

Destiny Sales Splits

Well it seems Sony might not be totally happy with the exclusive advertising rights they paid for Destiny. I would be too if I spent an tone of money and got seemingly nothing out of it. Well at UK retail.

UPDATE: We got the full breakdown now 46% PS4, 36% X1, 14% 360 and 4% PS3.

Original:
Yes seems despite the sales lead and Destiny ONLY being advertisements for the PS4 the UK high street didn't seem to care as Destiny's sales currently 50/50 split between Xbox and PlayStation systems. Another rather surprising detail is that this "social based" shooter sold better on X1 than the X360, The 36% to 14% is odd considering a lot of 360 owners haven't upgraded to the X1 yet and the endgame content is locked to friends only. Of cause this doesn't reflect digital sales and Activsion giving away new-gen digital copies with old-gen digital copies is sure to lure people to the digital side of things.

We currently don't have a sale breakdown for Sony systems but it'll be interesting to see if that mimics the X1/360 split. we'll update if we find them.

Abe's Take
I'm sure the guys at Microsoft UK are high five-ing each other today. I think MS has done rather good job of advertising the game on their own systems, letting their players know its out for their system too. I wonder if this split follows in the US and EU. I do worry this might make Sony be more aggressive in terms of securing future content.

Smash Bro's 3DS Impressions

We here at the GK UK towers have been rather distracted by Destiny (review coming soon) but a little gem appeared in our inbox that has managed to steal a lot of time away from the MMO-like Shooter and the fact that it's a only a demo is rather impressive.

Himaru catpured this image
We among several other Club Nintendo members have received a special demo of the upcoming Smash Bro's for 3DS to celebrate the games Japanese release date. There will be a public demo in a few days but that demo like other eShop demos will have a play limit.

Content
So what's in the demo? 5 characters; Mario, Link, MegaMan, Villager, and Pikachu. 2 game modes; Single and Local MP. 1 level with two forms; classic and final destination. What's not in the demo? a lot of characters, All but one of the match types, Trophies and alternative costumes. It's a reasonable demo content wise. Most fighting games only give you 2 characters, 1 level and that's it. All the game's features are there. Items, Final Smash and sudden deaths are all present.

Graphics
I'm sure by now you've seen the 3DS versions pseudo-cell shaded art style, The black lines do help with keeping track of you character and stops then blending in with the back ground. This is a blessing as Smash's frantic gameplay isn't a natural fit for the 3DS small screen. However it wasn't that much of an issue when I was using my regular 3DS and the larger XL model with have even less of an issue.
Overall the game looks mighty fine on the 3DS, the character models look fantastic and the level match that quality.

Gameplay
The game runs perfectly on the 3DS, Animations are perfectly smooth even with the 3D on, Constantly running at 60 FPS. Whilst secondary characters (Pokemon/assist trophies) run only at 30FPS but frankly, if they are on the screen you have other issues than it's not as smooth as you, So you wont notice it.

The core gameplay remains largely the same all though everything has receive a rebalancing. The games speed is faster than Brawl's "thoughtful" speed but slower than Melee's "twitchy" speed which seems to give the game a "best of both worlds" feel. It's slow enough for you to counter attacks but fast enough for you to exploit openings. The new item's work as advertised Mario Kart's dreaded Blue Shell makes it's Smash début and works how you would expect. One weapon that caught me completely off guard was the beetle from Skyward Sword. This (trolling) weapon grabs your opponent and calmly lifts them off the screen killing them.

Verdict
A fantastic taste of what's to come,
Has completely crushed my fears of it being 2nd rate.
The demo also raises questions like what dose connecting to the Wii U version do?
Images from Japan suggest that the 3DS version can be used as a controller for the Wii U version.

I'm congindent with the demo to say...
Smash Bro's can be preorded for 3ds HERE for £31.85 and for Wii U HERE for £39.85

RUMOUR: Microsoft Want's Minecraft

In what could be the mostly poor timed move in the history of video game buyouts. A fresh multi sourced rumour has emerged.
UPDATE: Majong is now an member of the Microsoft family. Notch and his fellow co-founders will leave as soon as everything is sorted, they'll each be leaving with a cut of the £2.5 billion, notch owning more walks away with something like 1.7 billion.

Do Minecraft fans have to worry? Not at all though Notch created Minecraft he handed ddevelopmentover to "Jens" in 2011 and has made Minecraft what it is today. PC users will still be able to mod, record and generally carry on doing what has made the game legend. Minecon will also continue for the foreseeable future.

Do PlayStation, Android and iOS fans have to worry? nope Microsoft and Mojang, will continue to support these devices "and more". whilst this might cause joy in Nintendo fans it's likely they are referring to windows phone and Surface tablets.

The only concerning thing is that their other non Minecraft projects are now uncertain. When asked why and about his future Notch had this to say "it's not about the money, It's about my sanity" He never set out to create this phenomenon or run a multinational company "I'm just a computer geek, who likes to post his opinions on twitter" the designer said "if any of my future projects start gaining traction, I'll probably just end it".

Notch has been increasingly uncomfortable about the pressure of being the "Minecraft guy" and today's news confirms he has been looking for an out and felt Microsoft was the best choice to keep Minecraft going as is. It's expected Microsoft will make it's money back by June 2015 thanks to sales of the game, merchandise, contracts with Sony and the Minecraft empire in general.

Orginal Story:
Until confirmed this is firmly a rumour. right we got that straight? good.

According to multiple sources Microsoft is preparing to buy Minecraft developer Mojang for a rather cool $2 BILLION, this would include Minecraft and all other games in development. The rumour says Markus "Notch" Petterson would stay on to handle the transfer to MS and then leave for new pastures. Notch leaving has been on the cards for sometime, whilst he hasn't said it himself but ever since he passed Minecraft over to his 2nd he has been taking steps away from Mojang. Cancelling his games working only on tech demo's suddenly cancelling deals with other companies. Notch has always maintained that they haven't been "in it for the money and only do what make's sense for our games" and whilst a sale to Microsoft might seem against that he has been rather open with his friendship with now Xbox head Phil Spenser and how he has enjoyed working with Microsoft (outside his issue with the Tablet version of Windows 8) so it wouldn't be completely unfounded,

But what about the recent launch of Minecraft on PS4? what would happen to that? it's unknown if they'd loose support and for the first time in Minecraft history a version of the game would be "finished" or MS would have to honour current contracts. However an insider is claiming Microsoft sees Minecraft as an "product" and not a game, Likening it to MS Office that runs on competing systems, So exclusivity might not even happen.

Abe's Take
Fans shouldn't worry as I doubt if this happens the PC version would change in anyway. Notch leaving the company isn;t an issue as stated above hasn't had much to do with it for the last few years. Microsoft isn't really known now for ruining devs they've bought. They tend to lock them into a theme but not much more. PS Minecraft fans on the other hand have something to worry about. As we saw when Amazon bought Double Helix developer of Stryder and Killer Instinct (reboot) the game's publishers (Capcom and Microsoft) had to replace the teams.

Watch_Dogs Wii U Dated

News that we surely brighten our newest member and a selection on Wii U owners. The twice delayed Wii U version has finally be given a release date.

Early thie morning Ubisoft Mexico annouced the game would be hitting Latin American shelves in November, Now Ubisoft have officaly given the EU release date of November 16th, which just happens to be the same time as both Assassins Creed: Rouge, and Unity. With both AC games missing the Wii U this was the date was expected, and as it stands this will be Ubisoft's last "mature" title for the system.

No other details was given about the Wii U version, it's unknown if it'll appear as a bundle with all the DLC or if it will get any DLC at all. All we know abouyt this version is the gamepad will feature a "interactive map" which seeing as the Wii U 6 month delay was to "enhance the game for the gamepad" seems a little... light.

Abe's Take
I predicted this would arrive alongside the Assassins Creeds which makes sense to Ubisoft but mid November is rather full for Wii U (and gaming in general). It's up against several big sellers for Nintendo's system including Sonic, Skylanders, and Lego Batman 3, but also is the expected release date for Smash Bro's for Wii U. If the game doesn't come with at least all the story DLC then Ubi has clearly sent it out to die so they can point to it and go "see that's why X game isn't coming to Wii U"

Miiverse Artist's Epic Williams Tribute

It's been nearly a month since the legendary Robin Williams died and the world continues to morn his loss even as other legends join him; Richard Attenborough and (most recently) Joan Colins. Williams loss has hit gamers that hardest, Most gamers grew up with his films but he was also one of us. Williams was a big World of Warcraft fan and they will be bringing in an genie tribute to him in their next expansion. But his very favourite was The Legend of Zelda so much so he name his daughter after the princess, Nintendo is looking at doing their own tribute but Gamers have yet to make theirs.

The above image was drawn by Miiverse Artist "Craig" using the Art Academy Sketch Pad app, It took him 13 days to complete this rather magnificent piece of true art. This labour of love is so detailed it's hard to believe it was done on the gamepad alone. Craig also added the legendary Hook quote "to live... to live will be an awfully big adventure." Since his death there has been thousands of tributes and many of the clever or simply charming and is a testament to the man of joy.

Abe's Take
We didn't report on William's death because I simply couldn't bring myself to do so, This man was a corner stone of my childhood along with the medium we all shared with the man. I know this loss was felt by many. In my house hold we celebrated his life's work and watched our favourite Robin William's films and we felt the joy the man gave us again. I had originally planned on ending this with the "genie you're free" scene from Aladdin but he wouldn't want the joy to end so instead I though this would be more fitting.

Amiibo Explodes Onto Amazon UK

We finally have UK pricing for the Amiibo range as well as which figures are included in Smash Bro's Series 1. What we wasn't expecting is how well they are all ready doing on Amazon UK.

UPDATE: Getting reports the Amazon Canada have had a similar invasion.

UPDATE 2: Seems to be everywhere Amazon EU and US also reflect this.

It's only been 1 day and all ready the Amiibo's have exploded on Amazon UK's best-sellers chart. The sample here was taken from their movers and shakers list which shows what products have moved in the chart over the last week. This the top 9 from the all formats movers and shakers. Link is currently doing the best having reached the ranking of 32, followed by Samus at 51 and Mario at 57.

Which is rather impressive seeing as they are (currently) Wii U exclusive and only (currently) work on Super Smash Bro's, and again this is the all formats Hardware/Software/Accessories chart, Who knows what's going to happen as we run up to Christmas and the games rumoured November release .

Now on to the details. Each figure has been given a RRP of £10.99 which is cheaper than we was expecting (the American price is $12.99 and usually they just stitch the $ for £) and cheaper than Skylanders Swapforce figures at £15.
The Series 1 characters are Mario, Link, Peach, Samus, Fox, Pikachu, Kirby, Yoshi, DK, Marth, Wii Fit Trainer and Villager. There are all ready shortages appearing for some characters like Marth as they apparently come in smaller amounts. The 2nd series is expect (though unconfirmed) to land in December.

So it would probably best pre order here, to secure your favourite.

Abe's Take
I am presently surprised by the price as i was expecting them to end up rivalling Disney Infinity's £15 pound price tag. I am slightly upset about the staggered launch but this dose allow me to buy my favourites in each group instead of having to make difficult choices right away... "for my daughter"

Here Comes A New Challenger... Well A Team Member

As we hurtle towards Christmas and the impending tidal wave of Autumn/Winter releases. Things tend to shift from news, as everyone gets dives deep into their new games and various winter festivals, and towards reviews and features.

Today we are pleased to announce J. Maxey will be joining our little team and will produce various reviews and features. The first of his "Hourglass" reviews is live now viewable HERE and over at our reviews page. These reviews will look at some gems, classics and failures from gaming history. Warning; lets just say a little... "honest" and some games may not survive the process.

Maxey: Thank you for welcoming me to the blog I feel very humble to be accepted as a part of its staff. I would like to thank Abe and Tanasha for trusting me with an inch of space along with my shibunken goldfish, and stresssball zebra for allowing me the patients necessary to review.

On the move towards halloween, I will be running over a selection of new and older games holding a spooky or darker aestethic under the title "hourglass" these reviews may vary in quality as undeniably will the games themselves...additional notes thrown in here and there to prevent the average Divekick champion in the back falling asleep.

Abe's Take
It's great to get fresh blood on the team and I am sure Maxey has a lot of retro reviews and look backs planned. This should help us fill up the reviews page

Minecraft X1 Release Date Confirmed

Boy it has been a hell of a wait, after being announced at last years E3 most assumed we'll have Minecraft on Xbox One by Christmas... we did not. IT's been over a year but we finally have a release for the crafting phenomenon on Microsoft most recent shiny box.

Friday, Yes THIS Friday. That's the 5th September and we as such we now have extra information. First up is the price £15.99 for new players but if you own (or have played the original version whilst connected to Xbox Live) you can upgrade to the Next Gen version for a teeny tiny £3.99, which is rather a good deal (which only applies to the first year of the new games release.). Further good news for repeated customers ALL DLC packs will transfer from 360 to X1 so feel free to buy that Dr Who skin pack or that Skyrim mash-up pack you've been hesitantly hovering over. Retail version will hit around Christmas

The game worlds will be 36 times larger which is great for people like us who enjoyed the PC version but played console version in splitscreen with friends and family, but felt trapped be the small worlds. Existing players will be able to load up the 360 version and upload their worlds to the cloud and then upgrade them for X1 for free. so you'll have a base of operations set up. Custom servers and expanded multiplayer are coming post launch along side the regular updates the game receives.

Abe's Take
Fun Fact: This game has been so anticipated here in the GKUK towers the X1 has been welded to the main TV (and not the gaming ones) since launch because of my partners desire to play this.

Zombie NEWS!

Now (sadly?) this isn't news of actual, factual zombies attacking the popular people from secondary (high) school or a virus spreading though the world. This is three news stories that skipped us by.

State of Decay coming to X1.
The title says it all really. The wildly successful (2nd best seeling game on Xbox live) and freshest zombie game (no DEAD in the title for a start) will be coming to the Xbox One
The upgraded port will feature both DLCs but with features and characters transferring back from Lifeline (DLC 2) to Breakdown (DLC1) and then to the core game. The team also plan on adding fresh content to the game, though the team was eager to point out this will be more missions and characters for the "system" (SoD's random world events), and not full DLC type things. The team all ready has the 360 version running on the X1 but aren't happy with just porting it and as such are reworking the art assets and animations to bring it more in line with Next Gen gaming (again devs are eager to point out it wont be a true next gen game). Here is a wildly loose trailer for it.

Resident Evil REmake RErelease gets trailer.
The 1080p HD upgrade to the Gamecube remake (known to fans a REmake) is set for early 2015 and looks... well a lot like the game GC game. They have done work to the character textures, brought in a new lighting engine and seemed to of hired cleaners to give the mansion a good polish. Gameplay will be unchanged from the GC version too, however there will be a "modern" control method. Fans of Resident Evil Revelations (news for you shortly) don't get excited as this control method is only the movement being in relation to the character not the screen. Check out the trailer and a comparison screen shot below

Resident Evil Revelations 2 formally announced.
The wildly successful 3DS (and mildly successful HD port) game that merged classic Resident Evil pacing and setting, with gameplay from the recent titles rather well. The game was leaked via 360 box are a few weeks ago but with no details. Now we have an announce trailer, vague details (Chris and Jill will not return) and platform details its coming to PC, 360/X1 and PS3/4.  Yes for some reason this is skipping 3DS and Wii U despite sales of the 3DS original out sold the others combined and the Wii U version did "well".

Abe's Take
I have a whole range of feelings on these. State of Decay was a gem. Zombies being more an environmental threat and survival being the main goal, made the game feel exceptionally fresh. Permadeath made exploration an risk but ever dwindling supplies made it necessary.

The RErelease on the other hand doesn't look good enough for a game that's jumped from the GC era to now. The extra polish highlights how rough the game's classic animations are. It will be interesting to see what reviews make of its combat as modern survival horror games (ZombiU, Dead Space and Silent Hill) are punished for "unreliable" combat. Personally i think combat should be unreliable in a horror games as it strips us of our years of skill and makes us vulnerable again.

As for RE:R2 I was excited when it sounded like we was getting a sequel made by the same guys but now, now I am saddened that I wont be able to play it on the two systems I own the original on. Though there are rumours that it will in fact appear on the NEW 3DS.

Saints Row Goes To Hell

Earlier we reported that Saints Row developer Volition was teasing something and now we know. Introducing Saints Row IV: Gat Out of Hell

As the trailer shows the leader of the Saints is dragged to hell in order to marry Satan's daughter, It's up to Jonny Gat and Kinsey to rescue him. Obviously being in Hell leaves the door open for dead characters to return and some pretty incredible powers. The super powers of are replaced by angel wings, demon powers and dual blades.  Looks like hell will be home to some pretty epic powers

In this stand alone expansion you'll be able to switch between Gat and Kinsey at will or play co-op. You wont require Saints Row IV to play which is handy as Gat Out of Hell is coming to new-gen systems as well as old-gen. But you might be the collecting sort and want this to sit next to Saints Row IV and be on next gen... Yep introducing Saints Row 4: Re-elected. SR4:RE will feature the base game, all the dlc, the two expansions and (quoting the devs here) a slight graphics boost.

Both Gat Out of Hell and Re-elected will both hit January 27th, will be available either separately or as a bundle (UK pricing unknown). There is a detail worth noting here, you wont get to create your character in Gat Out of Hell so if you want to see your boss you need SR4 save data and there doesn't appear to be any cross gen save transfer.

Abe's Take
This dose look really great and I do love me some Saints Row. I am however torn between which gen to get it on. I all ready have a history on 360. It was great taking my Saints Row Initiation station character to SR3, then SR: Ingratiation Station and then in to SR4. However I was expecting 2015 to be the year my 360 stops getting new-new games.

New 3DS & New 3DS XL Announced

Well this is surprising, we knew there was a Japanese 3DS direct today but everyone thought it will be a run of the mill "upcoming games" direct boy was we wrong!

Update: Nintendo UK has said we won't see the device till 2015, Apparently (unconfirmed) the N3DS will launch alongside Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate.

Update 2: Seemingly backing up the rumour of the new system launching along side MH4U in the west, Nintendo has announced an Japanese bundle featuring the NEW 3DS XL and MH4G (which is the Japanese name of MH4U). Just to be clear MH4U is NOT a N3DS game but will "accept" the new buttons.

Update 2: Here is the announce trailer from the Japanese direct

Original Story: Meet the NEW 3DS and NEW 3DS XL (N3DS), let's get this clear these aren't your usual refresh/new design. According to the Nintendo direct these consoles feature a better screen where the 3D effect works at greater angle, NFC (for Amiibo), micros SD slot, triggers and a C-Button that will act as an analogue stick. (like the circle pad pro).

But most importantly Nintendo announced that Xenoblade Chronicles is getting a remake exclusive to the N3DS. The reason for the exclusivity? The N3DS has more powerful CPU. Apparently the game was something they wanted to do with the "old" 3DS but it simply wasn't possible.

An update is also on its way that will give us themes for the 3DS's menu. Starting with Mario and Zelda Themes.

Abe's Take
This is a surprising move, creating an sub generation of 3DS that can play games the other models can't. I want it on record that I predicted an 3DS Pro with these features to act as a backup Wii U gamepad.

I don't foresee major issues as long as the western naming is clear enough that these exclusive games won't work on 3DS. I suggest Super 3DS (i really like the SNES buttons on the N3DS) or 3DS U

SHULK COMFIRMED

This will be a short one but a new Character trailer has appeared on Nintendo eShop for the New Smash Bros

Update: Here's the Trailer

Original Story: The new trailer shows of Xenoblade lead character Shulk taking on Bowser, Link and Marth as well as assorted game play pieces. His blade's various forms are the basis for his attacks, he appears to have a dash, counters, dodge and blind side attacks. his final smash is shown to be a pumbleing by his party and an alternative swimwear costume briefly appears.

Check out the eShop trailer on Wii U or 3DS, We'll update when we find a more "usable" source. This however confirms the previous leaks as true which we wont repeat here as to not anger Sakrai-San
This isn't from the trailer.

Saints Row 5?

After THQ imploded luckily several titles and studio was auctioned off. Saints Row developer Volition was luckily bought with the Saint's Row IP by Deep Silver (publishers of Dead Island) and everyone wonder what was next? Well the developers are teasing something for PAX.

The above image was released with the tagline "something wicked this way comes" now obviously that's a "Fler De Saint" the symbol of the Saints Row series. However there is clearly 666 in the Fler De Saint and the image appears to be a Ouija board. Could be be approaching a supernatural psudohorror Saints Row game? The developers did say they wanted to take the series in a different direction.

The thought occurs to me that the Saints Icon is in between the Yes and No, with this being an teaser image is possible that Saints Row ISN'T the game they'll be announcing.

The last Saints Row game to be released suffered from THQ wanting to maximise money. SR4 was 3 different Saints row projects fused together. Rise of the Domimatrix was going to be a stand alone DLC where the Saints was trapped in a computer simulation. Saints Row: The fourth was going to be about the saints becoming heroes after saving the city twice and becoming a spec ops team and finally Saints Row 5 would of been about becoming President.

Abe's Take
Saints Row has been a favourite of ours ever since SR1 thanks to its sense of fun. When GTA 4 appeared in all it's angsty, somber brown-ness Saints Row was doing Co-op stunt jumps on Mini Moto fighting motorbike samurai. I look forward to the games return

Dragon Age Multiplayer Trailer Lands

Yesterday we reported that Dragon Age Inquisition would be getting an multiplayer mode based on the Mass Effect 3's survival styled mode but turned into randomly generated mini campaigns. Today we have a game-play trailer!

first thing would like to post a correction, it appears the multiplayer in fact has 12 characters; 4 for each class, and not 9 as mentioned yesterday

Back to the video. As you can see there is a lot of interplay between the different class's abilities, we also get a look at the games rather nice crafting and customisation features. The Missions will be given to us by the main games' advisers which provides a nice link

Abe's Take
The multiplayer is shaping up to be really interesting and I am might impress by the crafting syetem

Blocker Who?

Minecraft for 360 and ps3 has received lots of DLC skin packs and mash up packs that tie into upcoming films and even other gaming franchises for mash up packs but coming in September is a big one.

The Doctor is in... Minecraft. in September the FIRST pack will hit featuring  5 doctors (including attack eyebrows), their companions and a selection of playable monsters which yes includes an Dalek. The pack will cost £1.99
They will be several DLCs that will launch along side new episodes of the show and will reflect those episodes. Here's hoping that's more monsters and less Clara outfits.
Oh go on here is a picture of the Dalek in Minecraft that I know you're dying to see

Abe's Take
It's always been a shame that I wasn't able to use my PC Minecraft skin I made on the console version. However the Skin packs have been good and certainly are cheap enough. I just hope this skin pack transfers to the X1/PS4 versions as we know some of the skin packs are "trapped in licencing" agreements. We still dont have an expected release date for Minecraft new-gen as it's failed cert testing on PS4 and nearly ready for cert tests on X1. "all goes well" we're looking at mid september

Miyamoto Wants To Leave "Passive Gamers" behind

The Wii did well, I mean really really well, A 100,000,000 sales. It probably really kickstarted the "casual game" trend and something Nintendo has tried to cash in on during the Wii U's life but Legendary games designer and father of Mario, Zelda and Metroid, Shigeru Miyamoto wants to change that.

During an interview with EDGE magazine Miyamoto was discussing his plans moving forward and his desire to move away from gamers who what he refers to as having a "passive attitude". The designer lamented their attitude of "Okay, I am a customer. You're supposed to entertain me" he even goes as far to say "it's pathetic they don't know how interesting it is if you move one step and challenge yourself".

The gaming legend believes it time to move one "Because of the spread of smart devices, people take games for granted now" and the shift away from the "passive" gamer is a good one for Nintendo going forward, they no longer need to worry about the game fitting in with the daily lives of the general public.

Abe's Take
I dont see this as an attack on the casual gamer as the casual gamer doesn't care what "behind the scenes people" think, as evidenced by the whole " Candy Saga" early this year. But I think this is also aimed at the Call of Duty "hardcore" gamers, those who dismiss Nintendo based on style of graphics alone. As such I don't see this as the end of Mario or Nintendo's style.

I also don't think his words (pathetic) wasn't meant as an attack seeing as his is probably the only man in the increasingly corporate world of video games that is there for fun and refuses to take himself seriously.

Dragon Age Gets Co-op

We're big fans of Co-op here in the GK-UK (not) Tower and when ever we see a game where you have more than one chum with you through out the game we always ask "is it co-op?" usually it is not. Bioware has been trying co-op out, Mass Effect 3 had a progression based horde mode that turned out to be a lot of fun and they are back to take another crack at it with Dragon Age Inquisition

Unlike their previous attempt Dragon Age's co-op has a lot more depth. At launch you'll be able to play through 3 light narrative campaigns that will play out in randomly generated levels, Though the campaigns are themed so you unlikley to be discovering an human castle in the middle of the Elven ruins campaign.

Who will you be playing as you ask? Not your Inquisitor (Spin on it!), not your companions or an random custom character. You'll be playing as what is basically the Inquisitor's (that's you) Spec-ops team. They're being described as Sub-Followers. They wont be fleshed out as much as the main characters but they will have distinct personalties and will apparently "banter" with each other. At launch there will be 9 playable characters, three for each class and each will have their own skill trees. You'll be able to collect and use the same loot as in single player for your co-op character.

Like Mass Effect 3's mode there will be the option of using real money to buy loot chests, which can yeild new characters, skins and weapons but they can also be bought with in game money and nothing is "locked behind a pay wall" so there will no paying to win (which frankly in a co-op game isn't as much of an issue). They plan to surport the co-op the same way as Mass Effect 3's there will be regular FREE DLCs that will add loot, levels, missions and characters. Loot found in missions can be shared between your player characters as-well as broken down to craft new items.

Team work will be vital in co-op as the single players tactical camera wont appear in Multi player teams will have to coordinate attacks, buffs and heals to take on these missions. If a player is killed outright (assuming there is a timed revive mechanic) then the enemies become stronger.

But why not full co-op you may ask, apparently like Bethesda co-op is something they always put on the board when making a new game but for various reasons it never sticks. Bioware say that this time it was they wanted to deliver 5 things Open World, Story, Characters, Visuals, and Inquisition. That combined with the strain of working on an brand new engine it wasn't "the right time" though they did point to Star Wars: Old Republic to show they are working on bring "true co-op" to Dragon Age (and possibly Mass Effect)

Abe's Take
This sounds very promising. Mass Effect 3's co-op turned out to be amazing by adding RPG levelling to an horde mode they fixed the obvious lack of progression. People are all ready bringing up Diablo and Borderlands comparisons thanks to its plan on abusing you're LOOT lust. Overall this seems like a decent upgrade to Mass Effect 3 and the amount of depth seems rather fantastic.

Dragon Age Inquisition can be preordered HERE which also comes with the nifty flame weapons

Mario Kart gets expanded!

For years people have wanted Nintendo to scrap Mario Kart and replace it with Smash Kart. Basically the same thing but with other Nintendo characters but looks like Mario Kart DLC might just grant that wish!

Update - Some promo art work for the DLC has appeared on the Mario Kart 8 site and appears to show (in rather tiny images) tracks based on F- Zero, Animal Crossing and Excitebike. As well as classic tracks such as Wario Gold Mine return

Yes Link and others are coming to Mario Kart 8 as part of two upcoming DLC's.

So far Nintendo has announced 2 packs at £7 each. The first is set to hit in November and will feature Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach and (Skyward) Link, 4 vehicles including Blue Falcon (Captain Falcon's Ride) and a Cat-Mobile, and 8 new tracks.
The second DLC will hit in May and will feature Animal Crossing's Villager and Isabel, Dry Bowser, 4 new vehicles and yet another 8 tracks.

Purchasing both packs (bundle or separate) will also score you 8 coloured Shy guys AND Yoshi

Abe's Take
It is worth noting that November is suspected release date for Smash Bros (acording to Amazon's Preorder page for the Smash Bros "fight pad") which comes with Amiibo, which was confirmed to work with Mario Kart 8 and seeing as Link and Villiager have Amiibos (Sadly Dry Bowser dose not!) its not hard to see a connection, Though I doubt you'll need the figure to unlock them unless you can unlock Link with out the DLC by using the Amiibo

Pokken Annouced

It was rumoured, hinted at and even trade marked but no one thought it would of actually happened but it has Pokken Tournament has been officially announced

For those who don't know you (but can probably guess from the name) Pokken is a combination of Pokemon and Tekken (see what they did there?). The game is developed by the core Tekken team and will hit Japanese arcades next year. we can assume that it will reach over here on Wii U because the Japanese trailer is full of lovely Germanic letters and English words, in fact not one piece of Kanji is spotted in the trailer.

Abe's Take
This like Hyrule Warriors at first seems like a bizarre cross over yet makes perfect sense and I cant wait to hear more about it, I sure hope it dose land over here on Wii U as it is desperate for more fighting games

A Wild WWE 2K14 Gameplay Fottage Appears!

As we start to see true new-gen graphics appear do you know who i feel sorry for? Realistic Artist and Animators. Those guys who've spent the last 15 years painstakingly rending real people's faces or every bump and dip in a car's design, and spending 100 hours watching how they move and behave to accurately represent that in-game.  Why do i feel sorry for them? because look at what can be done without them.

The new game features laser scanned wrestlers (same tech used to make Forza 5's cars) and motion capture in a special built (to regulation) wrestling ring. As you can see it looks might impressive but you might say "sure in a screen shot it looks good" which is true most published screen shots are prettied up a bit. so how about 3 videos of it in action. 2 are entrance videos so you can see the graphical quailty (sadly one had to be "acquired from gamespot" but one is off screen (video recorded of a tv) of an actual match played (baddly) by joe public in Gamescon

I really liked the number of "hit" animations there was in that video. As of someone who spent a lot of time recently playing 2K14  its nice to see the number of animations increased (5 fold we're told by press release)
I also liked how the wrestlers leg stayed hung on the rope after the suplex, It would be fun if something can be done with that.

Here are Randy Ortons and Goldust (who i assume is a different guy now) entrance videos

As you can see those realistic artists best start learning how to draw fantasy and SciFi if they want to keep working

Abe's Take
Always been a fan of wrestling games but ever since the wrestlers I grew up with in both WCW and WWE have disappeared to be replaced by American wish fulfilment i have become enamoured with the custom character suites so i wonder how my "traditional" character created with sliders will compare to these laser scanned icons.

Zombies Coming To GTA V?

What game cant be improved by adding zombies? Seriously think we'd all play a football game where the dead also roamed the pitch and keepers become exceptionally nervous being not allowed to leave the goal area and all.
This WAS NOT found by the code monkeys
The reason for the Zombie infused talk? Seems that code monkeys have discovered evidence of Zombie DLC for single player and multiplayer in the games coding, there are in fact "screenshots and videos" but they are just of the game loading then screens of code checking for said undead DLC before crashing And as such not really worth sharing here, a quick Youtube or Google search will help if you need that curiosity itch to be scratched.

As always take this with a pinch of salt as it possible the code they found was a place holder or a scrapped idea.

Abe's Take
The Zombie DLC for Red Dead was fantastic and well done, if we see a similar take in GTA V and GTA Online it could be a game changer. If Red Deads head shot only zombies invade GTA Online it could present a breath of fresh air to the "watch the dots" nature of GTA:O

Looks like someone pressed the wrong button

Whopsy looks like someone pressed the wrong button at Xbox Live and a game has gone free!

UPDATE: It appears that trials is apart of a new feature called play day, which seems to offer 1 day of free access to a game before it locks up and asks for money.

Head to the Xbox Live page HERE and claim a free copy of the rather brilliant (if not frustrating) Trials Fusion for Xbox One.

Abe's Take
F***ing run before they realise!

UPDATE: the non-demo demo idea was a key selling point of EA's Access program and its cool to see MS jump on that idea

Rise Of The Tomb Raider becomes X1 Exclusive

Well this was completely unexpected, after being annouced at E3 Rise of the Tomb Raider (sequel to the awesome Tomb Raider reboot) as a multi-platform title we assumed it would be coming to all systems but not any more!

Today at Gamescon Microsoft dropped a bomb shell Rise Of The Tomb Raider is Xbox One exclusive. During the stage show they used the word "exclusive" and not another phrase that popped up alot "first on Xbox" and interviews with Crystal Dynamics seem to suggest that Rise Of The Tomb Raider is Permanently exclusive to X1 and not a timed exclusive which has some serious implications for the series future. If TR3 isn't exclusive to X1 then how will PS players know what is happening plot wise. Time will tell we still have to get to Rise of The Tomb Raiders Winter 2015 release date.

Abe's Take
Obviously angered an lot of PlayStation owners who see Lara as an Sony icon though others are claiming it is no loss as they have uncharted which is rather short sighted. Reguardless of the sore feelings this is a major win for Microsoft and reminder that the gaming industry isn't what it used to be and platforms can't be taken for granted

Space Engineers Comes To Xbox One

Space Engineers was a surprise indie title that claimed our time, that gave us some serious Minecraft vibes. So we're excited that its coming to Xbox One as an timed exclusive.

We don't currently know what features the game will have outside of the current slate of PC features. Survival or creative modes in single player or multiplayer. We'll be grabbing this as much as we love the PC version, it is somewhat resource intensive and can be rather unstable on modest PC rigs. Space Engineers has a 12 month exclusive contract with MS so we can expect to see the PS4 version 12 months after launch

Abe's Take
I'm looking forward to playing this on Xbox One and will be happy to "double dip" to support the excellent developers. The only thing I want to see added to the X1 version would be splitscreen. Playing Minecraft in splitscreen was amazing and helped make it feel slightly less lonesome

Toy Soldiers War Chest Annouced

Here at GK-UK we really love Toy Soldiers, It's one of our highlights of the XBLA program so naturally we are psyched at the news of a sequel, Can you guess what time period this one is in?

Yeah the tricked you didn't it. I was expecting something like WW2 but that was unexpected.

So the Kiazer from Toy Soldiers (WW)1 will return but he will be joined by 3 other forces, One we saw in the trailer featuring Fairies and unicorns the other 2 are blanked out in the trailer though we can guess the others. One appears to be Sci-fi whilst the other appears to be some type of warriors.

I'm sure we'll find out more as we approach the "early 2015" release date but we do know it will hit PC, X1 and PS4.

Abe's Take
Could not be more excited for this, if it maintains TS2's co-op modes this could become an regular stable in our games rotation

EA Access Goes Live

You may recall us telling you about the EA access Beta last week that nets you Unlimited access to games in the EA vault, 10% discount on digital content and early access to full game "demos" before launch well now its rolling out.

The same 4 games from the Beta are available in the vault Battlefield 4, Fifa 14, Madden 14 and Peggle 2 but more are due soon and judging by the image we can expect to see NBA 14, UFC 14, Need for Speed, Plants vs Zombies and Dragon Age to appear in the vault and/or in the "Full Game Demo".

a quick reminder 1 month access costs £3.99 and 1 Years costs £19.99 so if you finish 1 game you're all ready made a profit.

Abe's Take
I'm very intrigued by this service I suspect games will appear in the vault once they get sequels announced or as sales dry up.

Himaru's Take
An list of upcoming vault games would help persuade me to sign up, though £3.99 for early access to Dragon Age alone might sway me

New Dragon Age Video Shows of Combat

Dragon Age's combat has always looks simliar between 1 and 2 but behaved very differently. Dragon Age one require strategical thinking and DA2 required quick reflexes. Dragon Age Inquisition wants to give you the choice.

Watch the video below for the full break down but lets quickly go over it. Without changing any settings or going into a menu you can flip between real time action RPG combat controlling a singular unit to paused time tactical combat dishing out movement and attack orders to your entire party. The impressive thing about the new system is that you can do one or the other but also BOTH. You can give orders to the rest of the squad and then lead them in battle yourself.

It's worth pointing out once again just how pretty this game looks and boy did that Dragon look fearsome. For those who don't know every dragon in Inquisition is a unique creature with it's own attack patterns, behaviour and territory.

Abe's Take
This is shaping up to be one of the best RPG's in a long while the previous Dragon Ages had various flaws that seem to be ironed out for the new release. here's hoping no new ones affect this promising game

Titanfall Update 5 and DLC land soon

Titanfall has evolved a lot since it's launch way back in march, new content in the form of modes, maps and functions have been added over the months along side the usual tweaks and fixes.

Titanfall will go though some extra changes this Thursday as a new update hits along side the new map pack.
First up is the addition of an in game currency (no micro-transactions confirmed) that will be awarded for completing (the newly added) daily and weekly challanges, playing matches and selling unwanted burn cards. The purpose of this new currentcy? so you can (blind) buy themed burn card booster packs and new titan decals.

Elsewhere the Campaign has been moved into the multiplayer tab and levels will rotate though the story making it a lot easier to get a match and finish that campaign off

Here is the full patch notes

Fixed an issue where you could earn enough XP that it would appear to wrap around and reset your level.
Nuclear Eject: fixed a rare bug where an invincible Titan would be left roaming around the level because the player died upon ejecting.
Lots of yummy bandwidth optimizations as well as various delicious framerate optimizations have been lovingly hand-crafted and squeezed into the game.
Fixed case of being smushed into a solid wall while rodeoing and becoming unable to shoot through the Titan.
Fixed many cases of incorrect or missing impact sounds from explosions including Arc Cannon fire and Cluster Rockets.
Fixed a server issue when players used the Rematch burn card in areas where they would get stuck.
Fixed a case of getting a double lock-on with the Archer.
Fixed an annoying case of the party chat icon not appearing.
Fixed a case where parties could be split up.
Fixed text overlap on controller layout menu.
Fixed some kills/events not counting towards progress on challenges, achievements, or decals.

EA Unviels Xbox Exclusive Program - UPDATE II

EA was a big fan on Microsoft's always online vision for the Xbox One sure it took the pressure off them regarding online passes and 2nd hand sales but they also saw potential in its "your content, everywhere" approach and its strong digital presence and had idea's about their own sub membership and now we have first details of EA Access

Just what is EA Access? I hear you ask though the soundless void of the internet. It's a secondary subscription within Xbox Live for Xbox One £3.99 a month £19.99 a year (Currently seeking confirmation because that seems to be quite the gap between monthly and annual cost) that offers benefits to (assuming) Gold members

The Vault - Unlimited access to "the greatest EA games on Xbox One" that's Fifa 14, Madden 25, Peggle 2 and Battlefield 4. (the press release refers this list as "Beta users have access to" unsure if the Vault itself if locked to beta users or if the game list is limited in beta) UPDATE: Full game access is for all users and will expand after launch!

Early Access - Access members get access to digital trails for 5 days before launch and any save data transfers across to the full game (unaware if this happens for retail as well as digital) Fifa 15, NBA 15 and Dragon Age are all confirmed Early Access games UPDATE: different games will have different amount of content available in their pre-releases. Some will be full games with a time limit others will be unlimited but only be one mode of the game but data will transfer to the full title regardless of the form (of the trail or the full release so buy retail if you want)

Discounts - Access members receive 10% of ANYTHING EA from the Xbox store. That's full games, DLC, micro-transactions or anything with an EA sticker. UPDATE: The small print excludes Titanfall from discounts which I suspect is due to their contract with developers Respawn

The service hit's Beta today and will launch in Europe "soon"

Abe's Take
This is very tempting just for Early Access to Dragon Age and (possibly) Mass Effect 4. If Battlefield Hardline is featured in this too it will help players burned by the BF4 release know the game will preform.

First Look At Frontiers Edge Pack for Titanfall

There was complaints that the maps in Titanfall was all too "samey" along with "lack of" content but they have been approaching that with the DLC map packs and free Content updates. The first map pack added a Jungle, a VR simulation and a very "samey" level

The second map pack is looking like it will bring the break the so called "samey" feel to the maps.

First up we have Haven, This rather shiny map is set in an "exclusive" sun draped beach resort. Which has apprently escaped the conflict till now

Haven will feature large buidling both to run along but also inside of allowing for some tense pilot vs pilot action. Titans will occupy the streets as well as the beach and the roadway

Second up is Dig Site which (proably because we've been playing Alien recently) reminds me of Hadley's Hope from Aliens.

This level is set in the side of a mountain in a mining facility. this level will be filled with winding routes and lots of high ground for pilots. Dig Site is said to off mid to close range combat so keep an eye out for SMG's

Last up is Export, The final map is set in what is being called a "boom town", a settlement that exists because of successful mining of rare materials.

This map is set up for "house to house" close quarters combat for Pilots and plenty of natural choke points for Titans. With a smattering of roof tops for pilots to battle over and then attack rival titans.

All in all the new maps are visually interesting and do look like they will have different play styles (for the most part) to previous maps.

First look Halo 5's Agent locke

A while ago we got a look at the Halo 5: Guardians box art (below) and it showed chief but also an new character. Now we can see under the hood of the new character

There was a lot of guess work, was it really a Spartan? could it be Cortana in a robot body? Small details started to appear. We now know its a Spartan by the name of Agent Locke and that he'll co-star not only in Halo 5 but also Halo: Nightfall the live action series produced by Ridley Scott.

Agent Lock will be played by Mike Colter (The Good Wife and The Following) and (is Believed) he will also voice the character in Halo 5. It's also believed that Agent Locke will appear in some form in Halo: Master Chief Collection's meta story told though terminals hidden though Halo 2 and 3.

Trailer for the said collection suggests that Locke has a history with chief and seems to be reciving someform of training from the Arbiter
X

Abe's Take
We still don't know that much about Locke. Why is he an Spartan but doesn't carry a Navy rank perhaps he is part of O.N.I (Office Of Navel Intelligence)? Is he hunting Chief? I sure hope he doesn't turn out to be Johnson's son but it should be rather fun finding out

MASSIVE rainbow 6 Video appears

It seems after years of Call of Duty, Last years rough Battlefield 4 Launch and Titanfall shaking up the online multiplayer. It seems like the perfect time to bring something else to the table.

until last year the FPS genre has become saturated by "gritty" modern shooters. All running around with the same dull face, same guns and the same brown and grey contrasts. It looked like the FPS market had been played out (much like the music genre before it) but then came a string of releases that changed that. Farcry 3, Blood Dragon, Payday 2, Wolfenstien, Titanfall, (the incoming destiny) and even the Meh Alien Colonial Marines showed us FPS could have colour, could have fun, could be about anything and multiplayer didnt have to be like CoD or Battlefield.

Now the rule book has been thrown out games are off doing there own thing such as Rainbow Six Siege for which we have 24 Minutes of live stream footage for you. This Raindbow Six isn't like the last few that tried to lure the CoD crowd, Seige is bring back what the series stood for; Tactics, Teamwork and... Hostages!

Abe's Take
In a year where people are feeling burnt out with CoD and weary of Battlefield R6: Seige could easily become many's go to online game. Unless CoD or BF: Hardline are major shake ups of the core gameplay I can see myself buying this and Team GK-UK will comically struggle to rescue/hold the hostage
